GE / 3-MCPD
GE and 3-MCPD are both process contaminants which are formed during heating (refining) of vegetable oils. Levels of these contaminants are depending on the nature and quality of the refined oil. Research have shown that GE and 3-MCPD is risky for public health because it is genotoxic and carcinogenic. Risk assessments to normal consumer behaviour states that these levels are safe. As a result of the risk assessment the European Commission has determined legal maximum levels. GE: max 1.00 ppm, 3-MCPD: max 1.25-2.50 ppm (depending on nature product). For baby food purposes these levels are even lower. SRC takes maximum efforts to reduce formation of these contaminants. To avoid any unnecessary risk and ensure quality SRC has decided in 2021 to invest in equipment for analysing GE and 3-MCPD. Results of analyses are fast available what secures food safety without unnecessary delays in the supply chain. After validation of the analysis method and education of our chemical analysts the equipment was operational in January 2022. The validated analysis is carried out in accordance with the ISO 18363-4 method. Ring tests with accredited laboratory secures that results of analysis are reliable.
